Having A Safe Winter Break

Hey Brescia! We did it! We’ve made it past first semester and are officially on winter break!

If you’re anything like me, your personal life has likely been put on hold since the start of December, with all of your spare time going towards finishing last minute assignments and preparing for exams. Now that we’ve made it past first term, personal endeavors can resume. Well, as much as they can with the pandemic going on.

In recent years, going home for the holidays usually leads to catching up with friends and family you haven’t seen since the semester at parties and other social gatherings. This year, however, those traditions need to look a little bit different.

As we reach the tenth month of the pandemic, virtual and socially distanced events should be expected. All in-person gatherings should be held with those in your immediate household - especially with all of Ontario in lockdown once again.

Though the prospect of not seeing loved ones in person this holiday season is disappointing, we all need to do our part so that we can all safely gather again in the future. The following is a list of some pandemic-friendly activities to do over winter break.

  • Host a virtual holiday party!

    • Have your crew dress in their ugliest sweaters and festive pajamas and meet up over Zoom! Catch up and chat about what’s new in everyone’s lives or put a festive spin on some of the following ideas.

  • Game night!

    • Gather a group and play an online game that allows players to play together on their own devices such as a Jackbox Party Pack

    • Have everyone prepare ten or so trivia questions and quiz each other ! Topics can be completely random or follow a theme such as Holiday Movies or a favourite TV series

  • Streaming Party!

    • Extensions such as Netflix Party allow multiple devices to watch content simultaneously, so call your group and spend a night watching your favourite holiday movies or binge a favourite show

  • Send personalized mail to your loved ones!

    • It’s surprisingly inexpensive to send a letter - plain envelopes can be bought in bulk for under $5 and stamps are around one dollar each. Take advantage of this and send your loved ones personalized letters over the holidays.

    • If this isn’t your style, you could also surprise loved ones by ordering them a gift or food online and having it delivered to their home!

  • Take some time for yourself!

    • A break after first semester is well deserved so take time to do all of those things you’ve put off without needing to worry about school. Read those books you’ve had sitting on your shelf for ages. Watch that show you’ve heard amazing things about. This holiday especially should be dedicated to relaxation and caring for yourself.

Though what happens in the New Year for Brescia is uncertain, we all have the responsibility to spend these next few weeks doing our best to slow the spread of Covid-19.

Happy holidays everyone!
