The Reader’s Society: Brescia’s Book Club

On October 22nd, Brescia’s Reader’s Society had its first meeting. The club, organized by BUCSC’s English Representative Kaatje “Kat” Kempe, was formed to create “a place where literature and English fanatics can connect with one another and engage in book club discussions and activities.” Over the course of the 2020/2021 academic year, the club will read one novel and host monthly discussions over Zoom.

In the first meeting, members voted on which novel they would like to focus on, ultimately choosing to spend the year reading and discussing All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

As put by Kat:

“This book is about a blind girl in Paris and an orphan boy in Germany during the Second World War. It alternates between their points of view and it won the Pulitzer Prize for its incredible writing. I was hesitant to read this book at first as it looked a little heavy and I thought the writing would be pretty advanced, but it was actually one of the most beautiful, timeless books I've ever read, and the only book that's ever made me cry. The plot revolves around secret radio broadcasts, a supposedly cursed diamond, a little town by the sea and Hitler's school of youth.”

The novel is available for purchase through Amazon and Indigo, but a free PDF file is also available at: http://ahhssummerreading.weebly.com/uploads/1/0/3/7/103700016/all_the_light_we_cannot_see.pdf

The Reader’s Society will host their next meeting on November 19th, 2020 and will be discussing the first hundred pages of the novel from the section titled “Leaflets” until the section titled “Trapped”.
